Races in Silverstone are always exciting and the same was expected by the fans this Sunday. Championship leader Max Verstappen was looking to increase his lead. Defending Champion Lewis Hamilton was looking to close the gap between the two. However, the very first lap saw some incredibly hard racing which is very rare to see these days. Sadly the hard racing eventually went too far when Hamilton touched Verstappen’s Right Rear tyre trying to overtake him in what is possibly the fastest corner of the entire season.
Hamilton’s mistake sent Max flying into the wall at an incredibly high speed and caused him to have a horrible crash. The car hit the tyre wall with a side impact and left everyone shocked and praying for Max to walk out of it unscathed. Fortunately Max did climb out of the totally wrecked car but the extent of his injuries is still not known to the public as he limped out of the car with the help of the marshals and was immediately rushed to the medical centre.
Lewis was awarded a 10 second penalty which he was made to serve in his pit stop. Hamilton went on to win the race, overtaking race leader Charles Leclerc driving for Ferrari with only 3 laps to go. However, many among the paddock and the fans as well believe that Hamilton deserved a more harsh punishment as his ‘reckless’ driving endangered the life of another fellow driver and the outcome of the crash could have been fatal as well. A 10 second penalty is the 2nd most lenient penalty you can receive and people argued that he deserved to be penalised more seriously.
Head of RedBull Racing’s Driver Programme Dr. Helmut Marko complained to the FIA that Hamilton should at least be rewarded a race suspension. However, it was the 10 second penalty for Hamilton and the decision was final.
Above all that, Lewis drove like a madman this race and hunted down the win from Charles Leclerc. Some may even call his drive inspiring. He did not give up and has reduced the gap in the championship.
