Graeme Souness believes Harry Kane should have been substituted much earlier in victory vs Iran
England got off to a brilliant start at the FIFA World Cup, as they defeated Iran in their opening fixture. The Three Lions scored a convincing 6-2 victory, with Bukayo Saka registering a brace. However, there was a big injury scare for Gareth Southgate and England, as Harry Kane came off the field in the 75th minute with an ankle issue.
Harry Kane was struggling with his ankle since the 48th minute, when he was subject to a strong tackle. Graeme Souness believes that Harry Kane should not have been on the field for such a long time, given that he was already limping around for some time.
"I'm watching England with a manager's head on and when I see the challenge, I'm thinking, 'this boy's got a history with his ankles. He stayed down a bit, he wasn't right, he was walking gingerly on it. I'm thinking, 'he has to come off now'. That happened in the 48th minute and he went off in the 75th. He had 27 minutes running on that ankle," said Graeme Souness.
However, Jordan Pickford has confirmed that Harry Kane's issue is not something serious. England will face the United States of America in their second group stage fixture on Friday evening. A win here could guarantee them a place in the last 16.
Harry Kane failed to register a single goal in an emphatic victory over Iran. Callum Wilson could start over the Spurs striker, if Gareth Southgate decides not to risk his key man against USA.
