Neeraj Chopra, the 23-year-old Olympic gold medalist in Javelin, is from Khandra village in Haryana's Panipat district.
He joined the Indian Army in 2016 as a Naib Subedar and is now a Subedar in 4 Rajputana Rifles.
Congratulating Chopra, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted: "The Golden victory of Subedar Neeraj Chopra at the Olympic brings laurels for the Indian Army. He performed like a true soldier at the Olympics. It is indeed a historic and proud moment for the entire country including the Indian Armed Forces! Many congratulations to him!"
Son of a farmer, Neeraj Chopra is an alumnus of DAV College, Chandigarh. He has also been conferred with the Vishisht Seva Medal for his service.
In 2019, Neeraj Chopra suffered a major injury to his right elbow, causing him to miss out on the action the entire year. However, he returned in time to qualify for Tokyo 2020.
There were celebrations in the Khandra village, where Neeraj Chopra lives in a joint family consisting of 19 members.
