Romanticism was an attitude or philosophical orientation that influenced numerous works of Western civilisation from the late 18th to the mid-19th century, including literature, painting, music, architecture, and criticism.
The Romantic period is argued to be the reaction to the Industrial Revolution and the Age of Enlightenment.
Mary Shelley’s 1818 Frankenstein represents a lot of elements associated with Romanticism and Gothic Fiction. Its characteristics included individualism, an emphasis on emotions, an idealisation of nature, and a celebration of creativity.
The scenic beauty and idyllic images of nature, that are described throughout the text, contribute in creating a perfect setting for the events that take place.
The text was received as a Gothic Fiction novel by contemporary readers since Shelley herself described it as a story that would “curdle the blood and quicken the beatings of the heart”.
Most of the writers in the Romantic period like Blake, Keats, Byron, Shelley, and others used the Gothic elements in their writings.
This genre began with some conventional features and themes of horror and cruelty to generate fear and terror but then gradually became a source to “attack the prevailing socio-political issues” since the Gothic novels had various possibilities and “symbolic interpretations”.
