👉The Low FODMAP Diet.
FODMAPs are short-chain carbohydrates that can be difficult to digest, especially if you have IBS. The Low FODMAP Diet is a way of eating that reduces the amount of FODMAPs in your diet. It's been shown to reduce abdominal pain, bloating and bowel irregularity within a few days. Studies also show it's effective in reducing symptoms among people with Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. However, there are some foods on this list (like garlic) which will not hurt you but still contain FODMAPs so it’s important to read labels when possible.
👉Probiotics.
There are two main types of probiotics: live and non-live. Live probiotics are those that come in the form of living organisms, such as the bacteria found in yogurt or kombucha, or even a fermented drink like kefir. Non-live probiotics can be found in supplements or capsules and often contain strains of bacteria that have been killed off before they reach you. A recent study by Baylor University showed that participants who took a daily probiotic pill had less abdominal pain than those who did not take one.
👉Antispasmodics.
Loperamide: Loperamide is an over-the-counter medication that can be used to treat diarrhea and constipation due to its effect on increasing intestinal motility. It's taken orally, but must be taken with food because it slows stomach emptying, which could cause heartburn if taken with an empty stomach.
