Asian Champions and 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar squared off against AFCON winners Senegal in a do-or-die match in Group A on Friday. Though Qatar put on a better performance than compared to the first game, Senegal eventually won by 3-1 to end the dream for the hosts once and for all!
Having conceded two goals on either side of the break, Qatar finally scored their first World Cup goal in the 78th minute courtesy of a header by Muntari. Though this put pressure on their African opposition, their joy was short-lived as Bamba Dieng scored Senegal's 3rd in the 84th minute to eliminate Qatar from the World Cup.
Following the loss, Qatar have become the second-ever host after South Africa to be knocked out of the World Cup in the group stage itself. Having to face the Netherlands next, the Asian champions could even end up losing their third game as well unless they can pull off a major upset like their fellow Asian teams!
The game between Qatar and Netherlands will take place on the 29th of November. The stakes would be high for Orange heading into the game as a draw would secure their place in the round of 16 stage. It has to be seen if the hosts can pull off a miracle win against the Netherlands in their next game!
