The FIFA World Cup has seen a host of upsets in the first week. Most of these have been caused by the Asian teams in the competition. Does this finally mean that the teams from Asia have finally caught up to their African, European, and American counterparts?
The string of results started after Saudi Arabia pulled off a major shock by beating Argentina 2-1 in their group game. Japan too joined the party as they beat Germany 2-1 in their group game. Whereas, South Korea drew again Uruguay in their group game and now Iran also pulled off a massive 2-0 win over Wales.
Apart from the hosts Qatar, all the other participating Asian nations have now picked up at least a point in this World Cup. Qatar too had their chances against Senegal, but they fell to a 3-1 defeat hence ensuring that they became the first team to be knocked out of the competition!
Though there have been positive results, can these Asian teams kick on and qualify for the next round?
Here are the remaining games for these Asian sides:
Saudi Arabia - Poland, Mexico
Iran - USA
Japan - Costa Rica, Spain
South Korea - Ghana, Portugal
If all four manage to qualify for the next round, it would certainly give a huge boost to other Asian nations like China, India, UAE, Oman, and others as the next FIFA World Cup is set to include 48 teams!
