You can fight climate change in myriad ways, and everyone can do their bit. Even the adrenaline-driven sporting events. English soccer club Tottenham Hotspur is doing just that as it takes on Chelsea in the Premier League match in London tonight.
It is being billed as the world's first net-zero carbon game in English soccer. And it involves a fair deal of planning to get certified as a net-zero game. Some of the measures to make it a net zero carbon game include supporters being encouraged to travel to the game by walking, bicycle or public transport and being asked to eat plant-based food for the encounter against one of the top clubs in the premier league. Food kiosks in the soccer stadium will offer plant-based food items: no beef burgers or meat pies. People have to munch on beetroot burgers and tofu. The teams are doing their bit too. They will travel by bus, which runs on bio-fuel. The teams will also drink water from the environment-friendly carriers and shun plastic bottles.
Tottenham is taking its image as a green club rather seriously. In fact, it was declared the Premier League's "greenest club" earlier this year.
Even the green field for the soccer match has been declared organic, with the garden mowers and other equipment used in the stadium using green energy and carbon-neutral gas.
The White Hart Lane stadium, built at the cost of over USD 1 billion, runs on carbon-neutral gas and 100 per cent renewable energy. The stadium has waterless urinals and very robust waste management.
