I don’t even know what people mean when they say ‘I’m fiscally conservative but socially liberal.’ It reads to me as ‘I want free markets and unfettered capitalism but I also don’t want you to think I’m a bigot, so I’ll say I support gay marriage’
It’s meaningless. Toothless. If you are socially liberal then you are invested in welfare, in uplifting the marginalised. How can you do that if you don’t want Jeff Bezos to pay a dollar in taxes? Where will the funds come from? Rich people’s charitable giving is not enough to do anything to help the poor. What is the use of being free in name if you don’t have the money to buy food?
I respect people who at least admit that they are conservative in all aspects. This business of ‘I’m fiscally conservative but socially liberal’ is the worst case of wanting to appeal to both sides.
