It was almost seven months ago that there was hope of the Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia and Houthi rebel forces in Yemen would come to an agreement. Saudi Arabia proposed an UN-brokered peace initiative to end the civil war in Yemen and there was expectation all around. That was then. The war continues unabated. And the Houthi rebels have been advancing like never before taking control of new areas and ports of Yemen. The rebels have advanced so much that it has forced the government that is recognised by the international community to cede territory. Now the rebels have gone a step forward. Houthis have claimed that they have fired several drones at several Saudi cities on Saturday. One of the important installations attacked was Saudi Aramco’s oil refining facilities. . The Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia has also claimed that it responded and in the counterattack, several Houthi rebels were killed. Iran has been accused of helping the Houthi rebels. The United Nations, in the meantime, has demanded the release of two U.N. staffers captured by Yemen’s Houthi rebels recently. Their fate is unknown. Last year, Saudi Arabia and rebels held talks months after the latter used missiles and drone strikes on the oil facilities in Saudi Arabia, but after a few peace gestures from both sides, talks broke down.
Yemen has been caught in a civil war since 2014, when the Houthis captured the capital, Sanaa, and forced President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi and his government to head south to save themselves. The civil war between the Zaidi-Shia Houthi rebels and the Sunni majority Yemeni government has resulted in over 2.5 lakh deaths so far which includes men, women and children. Millions have been displaced.
