Amazing story
Dr Shehla Jamal, a gynecologist, author and a social activist calls the Covid pandemic to be a plague from science fiction movies where many people have died and only a few are alive.
She recalls the Covid times as anything but normal and restricts her thoughts to revisit the experience and wishes not to see anything like this ever again.
Her first Covid patient was a pregnant woman who needed a cesarean. Emotionally broken, Dr Shehla gathered all her courage and performed the C- section to save the baby.
After performing the C-section within a few minutes, she gets one more call for another C-section of again a Covid positive patient. While she was emotionally broken and scared for her life after performing two C-sections and coming in close contact with Covid positive patients, she gets another call from the isolation ward for another pregnant woman who too required a cesarean.
After performing three surgeries on Covid positive patients in a single day, Dr Shehla was sure that she too has contracted the virus.
In panic mode, she gives a call to her family and tells them to take care of her kids; that she won’t survive as she came in contact with three Covid patients in the last 24 hours. Thankfully, Dr Shehla didn’t catch infection and went to her family after her quarantine period.
In the first wave, Dr Shehla delivered 61 babies and catered around 214 pregnant Covid patients. With a huge responsibility of keeping herself and her junior resident doctors safe who were working tirelessly with her on the ground, she developed her own protocols and labour room.
She calls her husband her pillar of emotional strength while she got mental support from her patients who were fighting hard to recover with a positive attitude.
The incident of a poor old lady who refused to believe that she has lost her husband to Covid still haunts her. It was very difficult for Dr Shehla Jamal see her sit for three consecutive days at the hospital gate waiting for her dead husband.
