Due to increasing immigration from bordering countries, Manipur state recently wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding NRC for the state.
Later Manipur assembly also adopted a resolution to establish a population commission to implement NRC. The commission is currently doing door to door survey to identify illegal immigrants.
This led other states to take action for the same concerns as well. The Meghalaya government launched an online portal to collect data of all landlords and tenants of Meghalaya, to easily eliminate the illegal residents.
While the Tribal council of Nagaland insisted the government to implement the Registration of indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN).
Earlier the four North eastern states including Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur were under Inner line permit (ILP) system which is a temporary official travel document to allow inward travel of an Indian citizen into a protected area.
But soon Manipur started demanding for a better mechanism to control the entry of immigrants. As it has been dealing with an immense illegal immigration from Rohingyas of Myanmar, Gurkhas of Nepal, Bangladeshi refugees and many more.
But introducing NRC in Manipur may bring a few setbacks as well, a few being, the problem of documentation which was seen in Assam earlier where the permanent residents were not rolled out in the official lists, loss of documents due to shifting geography, shifting cultivation rapidly, steps to be taken on the illegal immigrants which is still undecided etc.
