Delhi’s own single-screen movie theater ‘Golcha cinema ’ was shut down few years back with Vidya balan's 'Kahaani 2' being the last movie screened here. Golcha Cinema was screening movies and entertaining it's audience since the year 1954, its days of entertaining came to end in the year 2016. In the era of multiplexes & Netflix, a single screen like Golcha couldn’t have survived for long, due to falling profits & the inability to compete with big multiplexes, the owners were forced to shut it down. Now only the building remains accompanied with the sign which reads ‘Golcha’ but this building is all that is left of it.
There have been various rumors that the ‘Golcha Cinema’ building will be transformed into a mall or maybe a car park. The question that comes to mind is that, is the only way forward is by forgetting and cutting down our roots? Can’t we progress and modernize our societies without destroying our heritage. My parents & grandparents have seen so many of their all-time favorite movies on ‘Golcha’, in times when it was not an easy or common experience to watch a movie, theaters such as ‘Golcha’ were precious to those generations unlike us for whom all the entertainment is just one touch away. My own Father has watched all-time classics such as ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ & ‘Sholay’ here and that too for 10 or 20 times. A place which has entertained our previous generation is no more and today only a skeleton of it remains which won’t be here in future and with time even its memory will vanish.
