Hi
Several of our CounterPivot government partners focus on data governance issues, in addition to their daily data management obligations and deliverables. Although they seem to be the same, they are not. Our Pixstory focus today is on data governance, and why it is different than data management.
Recently the GAO discussed this topic and provided the following observations that we hope are helpful to our Pixstory partners.
These include:
“Governance refers to the roles, responsibilities, policies, and procedures for making decisions to ensure effective data management, while data management involves implementing those decisions.”
A data governance framework is critical in ensuring that data are of a sufficient quality for their intended use by providing the structure for processes and procedures to identify and appropriately respond to data quality issues in a timely manner. A data governance framework includes processes to help increase collaboration throughout the agency along the data’s life cycle by clarifying roles and responsibilities and increasing communication and data literacy among staff.”
It is important that each of our Pixstory partners establish mechanisms to improve their data governance and “…identify areas where visualization and data-driven decision making can be incorporated into their data governance planning.”
