In May, much of Europe decided to throw open its doors to the great American tourist, one of the continent's primary sources of tourism income. The European Union was confident of the U.S. has won the battle against Covid, and it was also to signal that Europe was back in business.
It was also time to take advantage of the American tourists itching for a summer holiday in Europe.
Only a few months down the line, Europe is thinking differently. The European Union has dropped the United States from its safe list, and it has advised its 27 member states to reconsider allowing entry to nonessential U.S. travellers. As the Delta variant has raged in the U.S. with an increasing number of daily cases and deaths, Europe has been forced to take some steps to stop American tourists travelling to the continent from spreading it.
Although the E.U. advisory was not mandatory, each individual country could take its own decision to allow Americans into their country. But countries like Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden have become the first to impose tough rules on American tourists to Europe. For instance, in France, Americans who have not been vaccinated will not be allowed to vacation in France, starting Sept. 12. Sweden has said that it will not allow entry for travelers from the United States. Travellers to Italy have to produce negative test results within 72 hours of arrival and also have proof of vaccination or a certificate confirming recovery from Covid-19. Ever since the pandemic began, Europe's tourism-dependent economy has been hit hard. For instance, it lost more than 15 million U.S. tourists in 2020 and recovered a bit this summer, but the restrictions are back again.
