According to various news, China terms its stable GDP (before the pandemic) as a new normal.
Moreover, it had/has great plans for 2025.
I’ve written on China’s One-Child Policy, it may interest you.
China has released its latest census results. According to it, the last decade saw an increase of 72 million in China's population. This was contrary to some opinion that the population could see a decline. But the growth rate was slowest ever since the census began in 1953.
While some demographers have been warning China of a 'Demographic timebomb' with the young population likely to decline and the number of senior citizens go up, China needs to recalibrate its policies. The latest numbers only confirm the fact that the labor-age people are declining and senior citizens are increasing. The falling birth rate is also a phenomenon that is not showing any signs of going up even though China has lifted its one-child policy a few years ago.
According to Chinese demographers, lifting one-child policy will not be enough to avert a fall in China's total population, or prevent China from becoming 'another Japan." China may have to come up with more measures to encourage childbirth. [https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202105/1223120.shtml]
Experts say that China is already thinking of raising the retirement age to keep the people in the working force and also make other policies such as increasing social spending. The loss of demographic dividend will influence China's economy too.
With China in the process of implementing its new five-year plan, it may have to set new economic and social targets for the next five years keeping the latest census figures in mind.
