You might have seen a lot of Van Gogh on your
Instagram stories lately. Beyond Van Gogh is an exhibit that’s popping up in cities around the world. It celebrates the famous artists and brings his work to people who otherwise may not be able to experience it outside of a print or a computer screen.
I’d try to answer the question of “what is it, exactly?” but that would be impossible. It’s a little different in every city. In Salt Lake, there’s a little waiting area with tables and chairs and sunflowers where you wait your turn. Then you walk through a series of (slightly redundant) panels about his life. Last and most importantly, you go into a giant, bare room where Van Gogh’s work and quotes are projected on the wall. The music and transitions are beautiful, but it feels a little long and might make someone motion sick if you’re prone to that kind of thing.
My overall impression is that it’s overpriced but beautiful. Go if you can, but don’t be devastated if you miss it.
