So inspiring :") More power to her!
Indian shooter Avani Lekhara just made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympics. The 19-year-old went for the win with a score of 149.6 in the final event of women's 10m air rifle standing SH1.
She finished with a world record-equalling a total score of 249.6, also setting a new Paralympic record in the process. She’s the fourth Indian to win a Paralympics gold after swimmer Murlikant Petkar in 1972, javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia in 2004 and 2016, and high jumper Thangavelu Mariyappan who bagged a gold in 2016.
"I can't describe this feeling, I'm feeling like I'm on top of the world. It's unexplainable," Lekhara told news agency PTI. "I'm so happy I could be the one to contribute it. Hopefully, there's a lot of medals more to come.”
Lekhara's medal has taken India's tally to seven, putting the country on course for its best showing at the Paralympic games. On Monday, Yogesh Kathuniya won silver in the discus throw, while Bhavinaben Patel clinched a historic silver in table tennis, and high jumper Nishad Kumar won a silver in men's high jump event.
