Inhumane governments 🥺
The Arkansas Senate passed a bill that bans doctors from providing gender-affirming healthcare including reversible puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and surgeries to transgender youth, and allows private insurers to refuse gender-affirming healthcare coverage to an trans people of any age.
This bill has been widely criticized by major medical organizations and human rights groups, and was referred to as the “single most extreme anti-trans law to ever pass through a state legislature” by Chase Strangio, director for transgender justice at the American Civil Liberties Union.
Children who aren’t able to access gender affirming healthcare experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide than trans youth who have supportive doctors and families, studies find.
And the Arkansas bill is already threatening trans youth’s lives.
“I've had multiple kids in our emergency room because of an attempted suicide just in the last week,” said Pediatric Doctor Michele Hutchison, while testifying in front of the state senate in Arkansas after the bill passed the house.
Last week, Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson signed a bill banning trans girls from playing in school sports in teams consistent with their gender identity, along with legislation that allows doctors to refuse treatment because of religious or moral objections.
Hutchinson has five days to sign or veto the bill banning gender-affirming healthcare in Arkansas, before this legislation becomes law without his signature.
A record number of anti-trans bills have been introduced in the United States legislative sessions this year — from the over 80 bills attacking transgender rights, over 70 target trans youth’s access to healthcare and school sports.
Access to puberty blockers during adolescence is inversely associated with lifetime suicidal ideation among trans adults. The ACLU will sue if similar bills are passed, Strangio told NBC.
