It started out with a few women opposing mask mandates in their children’s schools. Other like-minded parents bonded up and a small group has grown to have chapters across the US, taking on the government. ‘Moms for Liberty’ has accumulated so much political capital from their vociferous opposition to masks that they could be a force to reckon with in the mid-term elections next year.
The humble beginning was made in Brevard County, Florida, to press for “parental rights” in public schools. While the classroom mask mandate aims to save the children from potential infections, Moms for Liberty want government’s hands off their children. That’s their slogan, emblazoned on black T-shirts: “We do NOT CO-PARENT with the GOVERNMENT.”
Their Mission Statement is: “Moms for Liberty is dedicated to fighting for the survival of America by unifying, educating and empowering parents to defend their parental rights at all levels of government”: https://www.momsforliberty.org/

Their “mission to stoke the fires of liberty” was bound to go beyond a small piece of cloth. With their collective power, they want pressurize school administrations on what is taught, how it is taught. They want to have a say on the curriculum and the place of conservative hot-button issues in it, from race to LGBTQ rights, discrimination and diversity. They want teachers to rethink what science is, what ‘fact’ is: https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/moms-for-liberty-parents-rights/2021/10/14/bf3d9ccc-286a-11ec-8831-a31e7b3de188_story.html
A photograph in a textbook showing two sea horses hugging may be a lesson in science to some https://www.yahoo.com/now/hugging-sea-horse-book-too-122530595.html; for Moms for Liberty it was too risqué for small children of elementary schools: https://www.salon.com/2021/09/25/moms-for-liberty-group-demands-schools-ban-book-with-sexy-pictures-of-seahorses_partner/
Kids shouldn’t be taught the meaning of ‘isolation’ and ‘quarantine’ – they might be scarred.
Such issues have found enough resonance to have 135 chapters in 35 states, with 56,000 members and supporters, according to MfL, which hopes have chapters in all 3,143 counties or equivalents. The movement has already started benefitting the Republican Party in Florida.
Critics say the group has deepened divides among parents and made life difficult for school administrators: https://abcnews4.com/news/nation-world/moms-for-liberty-calls-for-mass-exodus-from-public-school-system
Observers believe Moms for Liberty could gather momentum like other conservative movements – the Moral Majority of the 1980s and the tea party in 2010s.
