The Taliban are unequivocal in their opposition. But Turkey is willing to go ahead with the plan to extend its troop presence in Afghanistan to secure Kabul's international airport. Turkey's plan comes even as the international troops leave Afghanistan in droves and the Taliban capture newer territories and advance towards Kabul.
Turkey first offered the U.S. to guard the Hamid Karzai International Airport, when its president Tayyip Erdogan met U.S. President Joe Biden in June. The airport was largely under the control of the U.S. until now. Erdogan has called on the United States to provide financial, logistical and "diplomatic" support before taking over the operations. Why has the Taliban called the plan "reprehensible" and warned of "consequences," and why is Turkey pushing ahead with the plan?
Turkey understands the importance of the airport as it is the only secure place in Afghanistan to land planes and for the international community to get access to the country. Moreover, since Kabul hosts several diplomatic missions, the airport would play an important role in the future. According to experts, Turkey sees it as a strategic opportunity to establish itself as a serious player in the world. Turkey may also see this as an opportunity to build bridges with countries like the U.S., U.K., the E.U. and others.
Turkey can also this as an opportunity for its businesses to expand in Afghanistan. Although Turkey's trade with Afghanistan is meager compared to other countries, it sees more opportunity in the infrastructure and other projects in the war-torn country.
As for Taliban's opposition, Erdogan has said that his country is willing to negotiate with it.
