Dragon’s Teeth and Dragon’s Brain continues.....
In the Tibet Autonomous Region, China has at least five other bases for missiles. These are at Kongpo Nytri, Powo Tamo, Rudok, Golmud, and Nagchuka. From these bases the whole of north India, and also Russia’s southern Siberia are within reach of Chinese weapons.
At a rough estimate, there are at least 8 Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs), about 20 Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs), and at least 70 Short-Range Ballistic Missiles (SRBMs)
positioned in all of Tibet.
Since most Indians are unaware of the kind of missile sites that target India from the Tibetan plateau, a description of the recently upgraded Delingha missile deployment area 643 Missile Brigade, (under 64 Missile Base at Xining), located at 37 degrees 24 min. 27 sec 3 North, 97 degrees 3 min. 21 sec. East , is educative. It is situated 1900 km North-East of Delhi. This base was built in the 1970’s, with extensive underground storage facilities, and was known to house DF-21 missiles with a range of about 2,200 km.
As now reported by Dr. Hans M. Kristensen on 15th May 2008, this base has been recently upgraded with new missile launch sites added, with 58 launch pads now situated within the base, many added in the last four years. Targeting Delhi would be normal for a non-alert retaliatory posture. (Targeting Russian ICBM bases and airbases would be a step further, more in the direction of a counter-force posture).
This Da Qaidam deployment area is located in the northern part of
the PRC’s Qinghai Province. It consists of two areas west of Delingha
and Da Qaidam. The 58 identified launch pads are scattered over an
area roughly 275 km long along the Highway 4315 from Delingha
through Da Qaidam to Mahai. All the launch pads are on the north of
the highway. The combined deployment area covers approximately
2,000 sq km.
