The 2022 FIFA World Cup kicked off on November 20th as it saw the hosts, Qatar, lose 2-0 to Ecuador on home soil. Just a day later, Gareth Southgate’s England side kickstarted their World Cup campaign with an emphatic 6-2 win over Iran. After a few shaky results prior to the World Cup, England have shown that they are well and truly a threat to any team and that they could have what it takes to win the World Cup. This would be their first major European since 1966. Here are three reasons why England could win the World Cup.
On paper, it is fair to say that England have one of the strongest teams heading into the World Cup stacked with experienced players who have been representing the country under manager Gareth Southgate for many years. These players include the likes of Harry Kane, Kieran Trippier, Raheem Sterling and Jordan Pickford. These are just some of the players who helped England reach the final of The Euros which they lost to Italy on penalties. These players were also a part of the last World Cup squad in 2018 that also had an impressive run, reaching the semi-finals of the tournament in Russia. With many experienced heads in this squad, England will be confident and comfortable on the big stage and their confidence will only grow as they progress out of the group stage and into the knockout stages of the tournament.
Despite the aforementioned point, England’s younger players will also massively help the team in this tournament. Players such as Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka will add a different dynamic to the squad and their hunger and desire will help the team play better and work harder all around. Jude Bellingham scored England’s first goal of their 2022 World Cup campaign.
