In his new year greetings to President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that in 2021 Russia and China's interaction was "productive" and relations at all levels, including trade, were up at an all-time high. He hoped that it would only get better in 2022 and the coming years.

Both countries don't have a formal defense deal, but the military cooperation between the two has been increased in 2021, including joint naval patrols in the disputed South China Sea.
