A trip to Europe continues...
I gave some of my clothes to the hotel laundry
for washing and had to pay thrice their price as a charge for having them washed once! From Verona, we returned to Geneva by train via Milan. There again on account of our ignorance of Italian or French we did not know how to order lunch or how to get any food. At one station where the train halted, I got down and found a number of persons buying lunch. I also stood in the queue. When my turn came I placed before the man at the counter a number of liras. In return he gave me a lunch basket containing bread stuffed with ham, and macaroni cooked with tomato sauce, adding two bottles of red wine. We were feeling hungry and immensely enjoyed the food, but no water was available to quench our thrist. I refused to touch the wine and took lunch without anything to wash it down. Jagan Nath drank the wine with the result that he kept drowsy till we reached Milan. From there we went to Geneva in the evening and were lodged in a hotel fixed up for us by Thomas Cook. By this time we had spent all the money we had brought with us. I had written to Grindlays to
send me some money to Geneva care of Thomas Cook. As we walked into Thomas Cook’s office, I found the money waiting for me. We boarded the boat Victoria by which we had booked our return journey.
The journey back was also very interesting. I never got seasick, even during the monsoon. We enjoyed deck tennis on the ship and joined in the other amusements. During the whole of this trip. I had refused to take tea. I used to drink chocolate or milk. I had. not yet tasted coffee. On the boat. all my friends insisted that I should take some coffee. One evening I took cold coffee. I liked it so much that before going to bed I took a cup of hot coffee again.
