Acknowledgment
This work is an outcome of a personal voyage of discovery of an intriguing land that is Afghanistan. I would like to acknowledge the support provided by the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies (MAKAIAS), Kolkata, without which this study would not have been possible. I am indebted to my supervisor, Dr. Anindya Jyoti Majumder, whose scholarly guidance and constructive suggestions are primary to this work. I am especially grateful to Prof. Jayanta Kumar Ray, Chairman of
the Executive Council, MAKAIAS, whose constant encouragement and academic vision always remained an inspiration. I am particularly thankful to the Director, MAKAIAS, Prof. H.S. Vasudevan, for the support and academic inputs. I am grateful to Prof. Om Prakash Mishra for encouraging me to take up this work in the first place. I need to strongly and specially acknowledge the contribution of Mr Zubair
Popalzai and Mr. Akabir Rehman. It was their generous support and
assistance that enabled me to collect the primary data from various
organizations, institutes, UN bodies and the Afghan people during my
study trip to Afghanistan in October 2007.
A number of people have helped shape my thinking about
Afghanistan during my first trip to the country in October 2007. I
acknowledge the contributions of all the people I interviewed and
interacted with, all of whom were happy to share information with us.
Particularly, I thank Melanie Lindberg of the Asia Foundation, Kabul, and Tenzing who were very warm and hospitable to me. I also take the
pleasure of thanking Madam Nancy Dupree who was kind enough to
arrange my visit to the Afghan Centre at Kabul University (ACKU) despite the critical fracture she suffered and was convalescing at Peshawar during my trip.
